Rahim – Ehsaas Amdan Program
(Gwadar, Baluchistan)
At the crack of dawn, the coastline of Gwadar is buzzing with activity. A plethora of boats leave from shore in fleets and based on their size and capacity, cover the designated miles to reach deep waters. Rahim a 23-year-old seafarer from Balochwar Gwadar is on one of the small boats, peering into the distant sea, hopeful for the day ahead. His family has been dependent on the sea for sustenance for generations – one day the sea rewards them with a bountiful catch, while on others it sends them home empty handed. This uncertainty of daily wages impacts the financial decisions that Rahim and his family make. He narrates that his cousin who is a BA degree holder is also a seafarer but due to better financial prospects, owns his own Kati boat. With the Ehsaas Amdan program, Rahim was able to qualify for his own fishing net. This simple yet essential item has freed him from the shackles of bonded labor. Earlier, he was dependent on the Kati (small fishing boat) owner for his daily wages. Now he is in a partnership with him! Rahim rides out with the Kati driver and as they anchor in the deep sea, he unfolds his prized net delicately into the sea and maneuvers for the catch. Whatever bounty he gets for the day is split as a profit between his team and the Kati owner. This basic tool has allowed Rahim to drive his daily earnings up by 60% and he is also setting aside a small sum each month to invest in a Kati of his own.
