Wadoo - Ehsaas Amdan Program

(Thabo Meghwar, Tharparkar, Sindh)
In 40 degrees C we see Wadoo and her son working on a heavy woolen shawl in their courtyard. Hailing from the Meghwar (untouchable) community, Wadoo is the chief in her region and known for her contributions to women’s empowerment. She has 3 daughters and 3 sons, who live in her bare yet pristine mud compound. The harsh terrain of Tharparkar does not stop her from pursuing her business venture – shawl weaving and quilting. Before the Amdan support, they would earn 10,000 rupees and the expenses would be 20000 rupees – they were constantly shackled in a cycle of debt with no relief. She was provided 6 goats under the Amdan program to rear and breed. Dealing with the extreme climate, her husband continues to rear the cattle which are at elevated risk of fatality during the harsh summer months. Wadoo’s venture ensures an alternate source of income and sustainability for the family as climate change continues to wreak havoc in this area.
